Remember Norm Peterson from Cheers? The same guy, same bar, same bar stool…every night. Sometimes, we all want to go where everyone knows our name…
Norm was considered a local on the sitcom, which every bar has. There are advantages to befriending these people. Here are 5 advantages to becoming friends with locals:
1) Can I buy you a shot?
- While Norm never took shots that we can remember, he was ALWAYS drinking. Locals tend to be generous, usually because they rarely pay full price, or are too boozed up to know the difference. Friend one up, and watch the drinks pour in.
2) Always have a drinking partner
- Regulars are awarded their name for a reason. They are ALWAYS pounding frat-siciles at the local pub on a Tuesday night. Of course you may become a regular yourself…but at least you wont be hammered alone every night. We suggest you friend 15 regulars at 15 different bars. Then you have options, think of it as diversifying your drinking portfolio. Make wise investments, make Norm proud.
3) Access to the Tribes Women
- Think of a bar as a tribe. They have their own culture, members, and currency is in the form of booze. Along with this comes leaders and their women. The leaders of a tribe are the regulars. They know all the people, have access to the resources (booze), and dictate who is acceptable within the bar. With great power comes great responsibility…and that means looking after the women in the tribe. Become friends with one of these leaders and gain access to the women. Lets not kid ourselves, Kristie Alley was a fox back in the day!
4) Learn about the World
- Cliff Claven brought us wonderful advice such as The Buffalo Theory. Norm taught us it is possible to run endless tabs, if you know the right people. It’s patrons of bars that can show you the finer things in life. Skanky women, PBR specials, and how to lose dumb bets while drinking. These are all things that can be taught by the local drunks. Get out and get some culture!
5) Local gossip
- Ever wonder whats going on in the neighborhood? Mr. Rogers passed years ago, so for the local gossip you have to head to the tavern. After the patrons are about a 12 pack deep, sit back and watch the stories start flowing. This usually leads to bar fights, hospital visits, or a shot of penicillin…but trust us, money well spent! When The National Enquirer gets boring, head to the pub and make friends with Norm.
There are many people who clock in at local taverns nightly…this is Mr. Opportunity knocking at the door. Take advantage of the situation, step out of your comfort zone, and learn a bit. Trust me, your Xbox will still be there when you get home.
Do you guys got any crazy stories about a local drunk you know?
